Pieters Graafland, a true gentleman on and off the field, had a fearless style of goalkeeping: without fear he dove with his head and shoulder forward for the ball. He also kept track of each opponent in which corner they shot the penalty kick. Eddy was excellent penalty saver, with good positioning on the line but not too mobile and always punched the balls, rarely tried to catch it and didn't look convincing on the high balls and crosses. In 1999 he was appointed by the IFFHS listed in the top three best Dutch keepers of the past century. He was standing behind Hans van Breukelen and Edwin van der Sar. As a goalkeeper, he played for Ajax, Feyenoord and the Dutch national team. At seventeen (1951) he made his debut in Ajax's first team, and in 1958 he moved to Feyenoord for the then record amount of 134,000 guilders. He came for Ajax in the Dutch national team, but then had to make room for Frans de Munck, who at the newly appointed coach Elek Schwartz would have preferred. In 1958 Pieters Graafland transferred to Feyenoord. On 28 April 1957 he made his debut in Dutch soccer team in the Olympic Stadium against Belgium (1-1). He would be 47 times the goal of the Dutch team defense. In the European Cup season 1969/70 he was called at the last minute for the final against Celtic. Happel had Eddy Treijtel at Feyenoord until the successor to PG proclaimed, but a few days before the final in Milan, he opted for the experience of the 36-year-old Pieters Graafland.
