INFO:

Horst Köppel was deep-lying striker who could play anywhere in attack and midfield. A technically very sound offensive midfielder, striker and winger with great stamina and a veritable hunger for goals. Köppel won six domestic trophies with Borussia Mönchengladbach. His main competitor for a place in the national team was Uli Hoeness who in the long run was just a little bit better than him. Perhaps his good-natured mentality prevented him from achieving more with the national team. He was very intelligent in coming from deeper position in midfield and score, had excellent shot technique which enabled him to score some great volleys. Koppel had good dribbling and acceleration, sometimes looked a bit clumsy but actually had very good ball control. Very mobile player with good teamworking habits, useful in defensive duties as well. As a striker he was active from 1966 to 1979 for VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Moenchengladbach. With Borussia he was in 1970, 1971, 1975, 1976 and 1977 German champion. He also won the 1975 and 1979 UEFA Cup. Köppel played in between the summer of 1976 and 1977 in the North American professional league for the NASL Vancouver Whitecaps. In the national team played Koeppel 1968 to 1973 eleven times and scored twice. He stood in the German national team, which was European champion in 1972 in Belgium. After his playing days he coached the first FC Viersen (as player-manager), Arminia Bielefeld, Bayer Uerdingen, Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Moenchengladbach and Fortuna Dusseldorf. He worked as an assistant coach for FC Köln and Eintracht Frankfurt. He was also active as a coach for the DFB (including at the 1986 World Cup).
