INFO:

Gressvik boy Kai Erik Herlovsen distinguished himself early as a great football talent. He was very ambitious and willing player. Herlovsen started as striker but when he reached the mature age was moved by junior coach, FFKs old great player Erik Holmberg, to the back line. In 1978, junior Kai Erik was picked up in FFKs A-team. He made his debut in the cup game against Rosenhoff on 8 June. In total he played 12 league games this year for a FFK team that only came in 2nd place in 2 division and thus failed the goal of stepping up. Next year he played all 22 league matches, and at the end of the season was FFK again winner of the 2nd Division Division A. After three years on the second highest level the club finally came back in the good company. In 1979 Herlovsen made his U-team debut at home to Scotland. A total of 20 U-caps, the last in 1986. In the following years continued Herlovsen in the same style. He played mostly rubbing and stubble of FFKs matches and developed steadily. In 1982 he played so well that VG had nominated him one of the candidates in the award of the year's end. The team won only one of two games against Oak and Steinkjer and thus had to take the hard road down in 2nd Division again. Foreign clubs had gradually become aware of the talented defender. Borussia Mönchengladbach manager Jupp Heynckes took a trip to Fredrikstad Stadium, liked what he saw, and invited Herlovsen down on a week's trial. Herlovsen impressed and was offered a contract. The transfer fee was set at half a million crowns. Herlovsen thus became the first FFK player that was sold directly to a foreign club. Initially Herlovsen struggled to find his place in German football. In addition, he is much damaged, but the manager did not lose faith in him. Gradually he began to slow shake off the flop-stamp, and from autumn 1983, he was stuck on the Borussia team. The improvement continued, and soon became Herlovsen ranked as one of the best foreigners in the Bundesliga. After three and a half years in Germany he was established as a reputable player. His contract, however, was pretty bad, and when it was renegotiated, he ended up in open dispute with club management. Borussia wanted to keep with the Norwegian player, but he instead chose to return to Fredrikstad in 1986. After much back and forth, he was redeemed from kontraktren with the German club, and 26 March, Kai Erik played already for FFK. FFK played now in the 2nd division after relegation in 1984. Herlovsen lost much of the spring season because of a meniscus injury. When he was ready to play, it was not long before he realized that the game in the Norwegian 2nd division was something of an anticlimax. Herlovsen swallowed some camels and went back to Monchengladbach in November 1986. Herlovsen convinced in his return to the Bundesliga season 1986/87 and helped Borussia took a strong third. The next season was primarily influenced by injuries. Early in 1988, Herlovsen operated the meniscus, and was put out of action throughout the following summer. In this period he was one of the dominant figures in the team, but the inflammation in the knee meant that virtually the entire spring season was spoiled. In the autumn of 1989 he was declared invalid for sport and gave up his career at the top level. Then he took over as coach of 5 Division made Tveter. He also made the Olympic team, was involved in the playoffs in the U.S. in 1984 with among others Per Egil Ahlsen. Norway was knocked out after the initial group stage with a win, one draw and a loss. In the years that followed, he was a permanent fixture in midfield for Norway. In 1986, he suffered a lot of injuries, but the following year he was back with the flag on his chest. His last international match, he played 2 November 1988, when Norway beat Cyprus 3-0 away. Herlovsen was a serious and disciplined player, with a broad range. In Germany, he won a special reputation as a strong marking player, steady and careful in the defensive efforts. With his intense style and hard tackles, he could also be partly hard-playing, he was feared by the opponents. At the beginning of his career he appeared as a slow, but became more strong and mobile during the time in Germany. This led to Erik developing his offensive game, and was an effective contributor to the build-up attacks. After retiring as a player Herlovsen had served as coach of. In the autumn of 1997 he trained FFK in a short period together with Tore Solvang in January after Alf Gustavsen had been released from his contract. In 2003, Herlovsen was fired as coach of Sarpsborg FK.
