INFO:Atlanta United was founded in 2014 but became a member of the MLS in 2017. The team quickly found success by winning the MLS Cup only one year later.
The history of professional football in the city of Atlanta dates back to 1967 with the foundation of the
Atlanta Chiefs. The team played in the NASL until it folded in 1973. They were known as Atlanta Apollos during their last season. The Chiefs had success in their early years, winning the NASL in 1968 and finishing runners-up in 1969 and 1971.
In 1978, a team called Caribous of Colorado was founded in Denver. However, the existence of the Caribous was short lived as they folded the same year in the move of relocating to Atlanta to reform the Atlanta Chiefs. The second iteration of the Chiefs lasted from 1979 to 1981 without the same success as the first version of the team. Atlanta United payed tribute to the Chiefs with two articles published on the club's website: one for the
1967-1972 era and one for the
1979-1981.
Following the second folding of Atlanta Chiefs, a team called Georgia Generals was founded and played in the American Soccer League in 1982 before ceasing to exist the same year.
The latest Atlanta based team prior to the foundation of Atlanta United were the Atlanta Silverbacks. Initially founded as Atlanta Magic in 1991, and featured only in lower level leagues and as an indoor team, the club was accepted in the American Soccer League in 1995 under the name Atlanta Ruckus. The Ruckus had the chance to play only one season in the
de facto American top tier league before the foundation of the MLS in 1996. They became the Atlanta Silverbacks in 1998 and played in the American second tier division until 2015, year of the dissolution of the club.
