INFO:
Nimble as a cat, crazy in an authentic way, brave, headstrong, divine and devilish, both a knight and a rowdy, he was the third defender/back (sweeper keeper), with the most beautiful parades. Outstanding when the ball is kicked out of the corner, he caught soft crosses with one hand, boxed sharp crosses to the center - outcome: counter attack and goal. Was as strong as a bear, with extraordinary physical predispositions, what distinguished him were trips beyond sixteen meters. He did not hesitate to run 30 meters from the goal if necessary. Sometimes he shouldn't have, but he flew out.

Partizan's best goalkeeper in the seventies. From Ćurković to Stojić, Partizan changed a lot of goalkeepers, but Furtula, Milić, Istatov, Ivančević and Zalad were not at the required level. With the arrival of Borota, that problem was solved and in the 77/78 season he was brilliant and one of the best in championship team. A brave "number 1" with great reflexes that managed to prevent goals with sometimes miraculous interventions in situations when it seemed that scoring was inevitable. At the same time, however, he was also prone to receiving easy and crazy goals, which top-quality goalkeepers simply could not afford. This lack of consistency certainly prevented him from achieving a more successful career and amassing more than just four appearances for the Blues' best selection. Everyone remembers the bizarre goals against Red Star and Dinamo Dresden. Valok gave him a chance against Romania in WCQ 1977, but after the conceded goal by Vigu from 40 meters, he lost confidence. In the decisive match against Spain, Katalinić was chosen instead.

Borota was the first Yugoslav goalkeeper who wore shorts up to his knees (sewn by his mother), he often appeared at matches with a cap on his head, his afro-hairstyle, or "mini-wave" that he did after the famous Kevin Keegan, as he later admitted in an interview, is also remembered. He was authentic, all his own. Most famous for the fact that, playing for London's Chelsea, after a saved penalty, he walked into the goal with the ball to pick up his cap that fell off during the defense, and thus scored an own goal (although deemed false, the story was later confirmed true by Nenad Stojkovic and Aco Trifunovic).

He started his career in OFK Belgrade, guarding the goal in 176 games, of which 131 were in the league. During the time of Petr Borota, OFK won two third places in 1972 and 1973, two fifth places in 1970 and 1974, one fourth place in 1971 and one eighth place in 1975 in the Yugoslav league. With the OFK Belgrade team, he did not achieve satisfactory results for him, although he defended excellently, so in 1976/77. he transferred to FK Partizan. Immediately after arriving at Partizan, Borota contributed to the team and won the sympathy of the fans. Under the leadership of Ante Mladinić, Partizan overwhelmingly won the title of national champion that season, as many as five points ahead of second-placed Crvena zvezda, and Borota capitulated only 19 times in 34 games. He spent two seasons in the black and white jersey, after which he went to London's Chelsea for a sum of 70,000 pounds, where he stayed for three years. He made his debut for the team from Stamford Bridge in a spectacular way, keeping a clean sheet in the game against Liverpool, who were the champions of Europe at the time.

In Chelsea, he sat on the crossbar and shot balls from corners with his head instead of his hand. Petar enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the supporters who relished his outrageous acrobatics and regular forays up-field. His popularity was never better exemplified than at Southampton in January 1981 when he stepped in to quell a near-riot which was breaking out behind him. His playing style often had the fans' hearts in their mouths and the inevitable finally happened in February when he was caught in possession by Watford's Malcolm Poskett as he dallied with the ball 30 yards from goal, allowing the Watford man to score the only goal of the game. Borota did, however, keep 16 clean sheets in 1980/81 and that, allied to the fact that Chelsea failed to score in 19 of their last 22 league matches, made him the obvious choice for the Player of the Year award. The Blues appointed John Neal as manager in the summer of 1981 but he was unconvinced by the Yugoslav. He later played in Portugal for Portimonense (he alternated with the bench only and only because he had Vítor Damas as a partner), Boavista (Henrique Calisto, Boavista's technical, asked him to take off the sunglasses he was wearing, Borota having refused and being subsequently punished) and Porto (he would take magazines to the bench that he would read while the match was going on)...

He defended as many as 27 times for the young representation of Yugoslavia, while he was in goal for the "A" team 4 times. He made his debut in a friendly match on October 5, 1977 in Budapest against Hungary (4:3), and he played his last match in Bucharest, against Romania (3:2), in the qualifiers for the European Championship.

Just some of the stats to put his goalkeeping into perspective:
- The 20 most successful Yugoslav goalkeepers by percentage until 1985. #4
- The most successful first league goalkeeper at #3 with 0.970 (238 games, 231 goals).
- The best-rated goalkeeper of the First League in 1977
If he didn't make mistakes, he would probably be considered in the top 5 YU goalkeepers of all time: Soskic, Beara, Glazer and Maric

QUOTES:

Gary Chivers
- He was an incredible goalkeeper, a real acrobat and vanguard for today's goalkeepers. He was the first to go outside the penalty area to intervene, regardless of whether it was high or low balls, and he often knew how to dribble outside the penalty area. He was not always successful in this, but he was always liked for his behavior. He was a great man and it's a real disaster that he died so young. Petar Borota was a really good man, a man ahead of his time

Peter Bonetti
- Petar was a strong player, a very good goalkeeper and an entertainer, a key figure in Chelsea. He almost played as a "cleaner" because he was often far from his goal. He was very popular when he played in Chelsea, that's why he was chosen as the player of the year

Ray Wilkins
- He's a tough guy. When someone caught a volley from five meters away and hit him right in the face, the ball snapped
