[i]INFO:Angel Maria Villar was trained in the lower categories of Athletic, a team that he had to leave in 1969 in the direction of Galdakao to grow sportingly. A year later, he was signed by Getxo and, just two seasons later, he returned to Athletic to triumph. After ten seasons at the highest level -in which he played 361 games and scored 11 goals, he won a Generalissimo Cup (1973) and a UEFA runner-up (1977). In 1981, he decided to hang up his boots.
Villar was an innovator in sports. Although technically limited, he was always a seasoned midfielder who was clear that securing the ball was preferable to losing it, starting a trend hitherto little known in Spain: he always preferred to make a sure pass back than to risk a long ball. He was one of the first footballers who understood the advantages of securing possession, which earned him never losing ownership at Athletic. Disciplined and fighter, Ángel María was a very valuable player for the team. He was a man who made it very difficult for him to make a bad pass, he was very sure of the pass. He didn't have excessive depth but he ensured a lot of possession of the ball.
Villar came to wear the shirt of the Spanish team on 22 occasions , with which he would score three goals. He debuted on October 17, 1973 against Turkey (0-0), in a match in which he played all ninety minutes. After that first experience, he wore the Absolute jersey another 21 times during which he scored three goals and helped Spain qualify for the 78' World Cup in Argentina an appointment he was unable to attend due to injury. Interestingly, of those 22 games with the 'Red' he would play 13 of them with Vicente del Bosque as a midfield partner , the coach who many years later brought glory to the National Team with the achievement of the only World Cup in Spanish history.
