INFO:Zuidema moved to the 1971/72 season from his Frisian hometown club for SC Cambuur SC Cambuur. In 1973, in his second professional season, he was top scorer in the first division with 25 goals. In the same year he moved to FC Twente in the Honorary Division. A fast and mobile forward, however fragile, often switching between a winger and striker, he thought two steps ahead and had a nose for the goal. He was twice the leading scorer for FC Twente, scoring 14 goals in 1973–74 and 10 goals in 1974–75, and participated in the 1975 UEFA Cup Final. Having finished runners-up in the 1973–74 season, the club qualified for the UEFA Cup. There Zuidema contributed with nine goals, including the decisive goal in the 1-0 away win in the semifinals against Juventus Turin, being significant in reaching the finals, in which FC Twente was defeated by Borussia Mönchengladbach. While at Twente, he also briefly made the leap into the Dutch national team, for which he played two games in the spring of 1975.
For the 1975/76 season Zuidema moved to the ambitious Ehrendivision promoted NEC Nijmegen. There he could not live up to the high expectations that were placed on him. Disputes with his teammate Jan Peters overshadowed his sporting achievements. In the end there were a meager three goals and a seventh place.
After just one year, Zuidema left Nijmegen for Ajax Amsterdam. There he was increasingly used in the defense and as a right back with very offensive characteristics. After three lean years, Ajax managed to win the Dutch championship again in 1977 with Zuidema in the starting eleven. In the 1977/78 season he succeeded Wim Suurbier in the right rear midfield and moved back to the national team in the run-up to the 1978 World Cup. While the Netherlands went through to the World Cup final without him in Argentina, Zuidema injured his knee so badly in a benefit game in Drachten that he had to end his football career prematurely. In his own words, he was better than Suurbier, but that's a highly subjective opinion...
The striker from Zwaagwesteinde will wear the Orange shirt twice, during the friendly matches against Belgium and West Germany in 1975. Johan Zuidema does not live on as the Ajax defender but as the forward who scored three times against Juventus, one of which is very nice in Delle Alpi.
