The peak of his career came in the early 1970s. Nikonov was even recognized as the best striker in the country, however he was more useful as a builder (playmaker) than as a scorer. Captain of Torpedo Moscow, at one time he did not play only as a central defender!
Two-time winner of the USSR Cup (1968, 1972). Bronze medalist of the USSR championship (1968, 1977) and finalist of the Soviet Cup (1977). In 1974 he became one of the "33 best football players of the USSR" (under No. 1 - among the central forwards).
