Short in stature, he knew how to jump high, and often guessed trajectory and catches up with declining ball. Nodia was distinguished by a goal-scoring ability, thunderstorm shot often heading the ball between taller players. A huntsman, he knew by heart all the “paths” leading to the goal, patiently tracked down, stalked his “prey” in order to “pull the trigger” at the decisive moment. His scoring instinct was truly wolfish. This could be confirmed by dozens of goalkeepers, including such celebrities as Lev Yashin and Pat Jennings from Northern Ireland. Even the defenders - "wolfhounds" could not bring Nodia off balance. His favourite point was the penalty area where he was a king with his speed of execution, he considered the ball sent from the edge of the field into the penalty area to be his ball. Although, this was much easier when he had Meskhi or Metreveli on the wings... He was named five times in the list of 33 best players of the Soviet Union. Twice he was recognized as the best striker of the year in the USSR. Member of the 1970 World Cup , silver medallist of the 1972 European Championship, was a member of the USSR national team at the 1968 European Championship. Spoiler: show |
