INFO:Solid right full back, in 73/74 replaced Epi Drost at centre back, became captain. As CB, he would take the ball from the back and usually build up the game, either with a long pass or to the wide. Similarly, on the right back he wouldn't have typical crosses but more like long weighted pass from the deep with a nice curl. If he would go up on attack his crosses were mostly on the ground. An easy-going play, safe and with a fine, elegant technique.
When he moved to Twente in 1970, Van Ierssel was still an attacker in Breda, but was turned first into midfielder, then centre back before finding his regular place as a right-back by Rijvers. Van Iersel stayed with FC Twente for ten seasons. He played 383 matches in the league, cup and European Cup, scoring a total of 15 times. With Twente, Van Iersel finished second in the Eredivisie in 1974, he won the KNVB Cup in 1977 and was a losing finalist in the UEFA Cup in 1975. In particular in the 1971/72 season , he formed with Kalle Oranen , Epi Drost , Willem de Vries and goalkeeper Piet Schrijvers an impregnable fortress as Twente defense. The thirteen goals against that season mean an Eredivisie record.
On October 10, 1973, he made his debut for the Dutch national team, in a match against Poland. The following year, he played five more international matches and was part of the Orange squad for the World Cup. However, Van Ierssel had Wim Suurbier in front of him and did not get any playing time at the tournament. In the first game against Uruguay he was on the reserve bench, the other games he had to sit in the stands. He played his last international match on October 9, 1974, one day after a year after his debut, against Switzerland.
