Rene Notten was a player with fine technique and use of both legs. He had a great shot from the way back and liked to have a try from time to time. According to former teammate Kees Van Ierssel, Rene Notten was a young and smart midfield player. He had an enormous urge to move forward and scored many goals by lobbing the ball over a keeper who was a little too far in front of his goal. Notten developed at FC Twente and in the team with Kick van der Vall and Frans Thijssen would always receive the ball from the back. With FC Twente, Notten achieved successively the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 3rd, 3rd and 2nd place in the Eredivisie in the six seasons from 1968/69 to 1973/74. With Ajax, Notten became 3rd, 3rd and 1st in the three seasons 1974/75 to 1976/77
Notten played 4 times for the National Team (3 times as FC Twente player). At the end of 1975 he moved to Ajax, after a controversial arbitration case that ultimately cost the team from Amsterdam money and Arnold Mühren. After a disagreement with coach Ivic, Notten left for Feyenoord in 1978. In his last days he went to Harelbeke, DS '79, Olympia Bocholt and De Graafschap. He retired in 1986 after a successful career.
