During that period he attended the World Cup in Argentina. In his debut against Ajax, he immediately scored his debut goal! In the beginning, he acted as a right winger. Spitz Kohn transformed him into left back. He saw Wildschut as a successor to Epi Drost. He also occasionally played at the right-back position. Halfway through the World Cup, he conquered a starting spot but was placed in the stands for the final. After the World Cup, he played a few international matches in the Euro 80 qualifying. In 79/80 he moved to PSV but had a tough start with Kees Rijvers about his attacking aspirations as a left-back, he was also used as a right back. Could be used anywhere on the right, very fast. On April 5, 1978, Wildschut made his debut for the Netherlands national team in a friendly match against Tunisia. There he replaced the then injured Hugo Hovenkamp, who was considered one of the best left-backs in the world at the time. Shortly thereafter, Wildschut was nominated for the squad for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. He was used in three matches there. In the 2-3 preliminary round defeat in the last group match against Scotland, national coach Ernst Happel substituted him for Wim Rijsbergen at half-time. It was his first competitive game for Oranje Elftal. In the intermediate round, Wildschut played against Austria and West Germany. He started both games but only played the full 90 minutes against Austria. In the cup final, which the Netherlands lost 3-1 to Argentina after extra time, Wildschut was just a spectator. On October 11, 1978, Wildschut scored his only goal for the Netherlands in a 3-1 away win against Switzerland. The defender played his last game for his native country on April 14, 1982 against Greece. Spoiler: show |
