Trained at Feyenoord (was a part of the 1970 EC winning team), but only broke through at Roda JC and most notably FC Den Haag, where he would spend seven years. He was a true scorer with a high jump and excellent head game, technically skilled and could play with both feet.
While playing for FC Den Haag, Van Leeuwen made two international matches for the Dutch national football team. In both games he had a starting spot and completed the 90 minutes. Both matches (against Israel and Tunisia) were won and in the last match he scored against Tunisia. He was selected by Happel but a knee injury kept him out of the 1978 World Cup Finals in Argentina. This was the same reason why he didn't join Ajax, PSV, Anderlecht, MSV Duisburg or Standard Liege who showed interest in him at that time.
In addition to the aforementioned international matches, Van Leeuwen played 7 matches in the European Cup. Once he was allowed to show up in a European Cup game on behalf of Feyenoord and six times for the European CWC on behalf of FC Den Haag. The quarter-final matches against West Ham United in 1976 were the highlight. Van Leeuwen scored the only goal in the KNVB Cup final against FC Twente on 15 May 1975.
