Deijkers liked to often go forward from the back, player with an amazing acceleration. Deijkers' style fits in perfectly with Rijvers' ideas - He was fast, agile and sharp and he pushed the team with his runs. Played in the back a lot (even seemed like a libero at times), fine through and long pass, could use and shoot with both feet. Scored some very attractive goals.

Deijkers played at the beginning of his career at VV Baronie, NAC Breda, Willem II, AFC DWS and De Graafschap. He became the top scorer for Willem II in the Eerste Divisie in 1969–70 with 24 goals. Deijkers was a clever goal-getter, but in 1973, trainer Kees Rijvers was looking for a left back and sees a modern defender in the fast player, who can also play in the vanguard, so he took Deijkers to PSV. The traditional attacker was drafted as a left back because Rijvers saw in him an attacking fullback. Deijkers was left back for four years, but when Edström left the club and Rijvers had no replacement, he decided to put the almost 31-year-old Deijkers in the lead. In the 1977–78 season, Deijkers became the club's top scorer with 18 goals to help PSV to win the league. Moreover, that was a successful year for Deijkers as he scored 8 times in the UEFA Cup tournament; the 1977–78 UEFA Cup won by PSV. Deijkers played six seasons for PSV, from 1973 to 1979, playing 170 matches scoring 35 goals

It is true that Gerrie was essentially a left-back, however this position was occupied by Poortvliet and they changed positions on the left flank and in the middle. I wanted to present Gerrie's set as a centre-forward just based on the 1978 UEFA Cup winning year alone however in all of the games in these 4 years it looked like he played literally everywhere in the field.
