A giant physically, was respected and feared by opposition strikers and defences. Despite his size he was not just a one-dimensional player as so many 'big men' were in the time period. A good touch and control, played with both legs (left not so accurate), together with the ability to send long passes forward made him bring a silky presence to the backline. Gorgon loved minor step-ups into shooting range and it was not so rare to see him have a long shot. Gorgon was an extremely fair tackler who used precision and agility to win tackles. As Gorgon played a CWP behind the line he was usually the most consistent point in the movement, which managed to catch practically every team offside sometimes as far up as the half way line.
Gorgon spent the majority of his career with his hometown club of Górnik Zabrze managing 236 appearances in all competitions along with 21 goals. With this team he was 1968-1972 five times in a row Polish Cup winners. In 1971 and 1972 he was also Polish champion and thus managed the double. In 1970 he reached the final of the European Cup Winners ' Cup with his team, but they lost 2-1 against Manchester City. In the same year he also made his debut in the Polish national football team.
Gorgoń was a staple of Górski's Poland during the 70's, and would only see his international career come to a halt after poor displays under Jacek Gmoch in Argentina at the 1978 World Cup, at his end internationally he had scored 6 times in 55 caps. After the WC'74 he lost his good form, because he drank too much beer. Then he liked the French wines and once, full of sweet wine, he demolished train compartment. This resulted in a long suspension. But coach Górski said that he would prefer drunken Gorgon over sober Ostafinski anyway! After he was pardoned, he injured his meniscus and had to undergo few surgeries. He did manage in the end to win an Olympic gold medal (1972), Olympic silver medal (1976) and third place at the 1974 World Cup!.
