INFO:Oberacher was a very fast flanking attacker, who was able to run the 100 meters in 11 seconds, but he just needed too many chances to score...
The self-made Wacker player was brought into the squad in 1974 when he was only 20 years old. Already in his first game, which he made from the start, he scored a goal. It should be his only one this season. From the 1974/75 season he was initially used sporadically under coach Branko Elsner, then regularly on the right wing. In 18 games he scored 6 goals. The nimble winger had his best season in 1975/76, when he scored 9 goals, although he made 31 appearances. In April 1976, Oberacher made his debut for the Austrian national team in a 1-0 win over Sweden.
The breakthrough was denied to him for the time being. His lack of chance conversion was certainly one of the reasons for this. For a striker he just needed too many chances to score. Despite this, he was part of the squad that played the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. There he made a 20-minute short appearance in the legendary 3-2 win over Germany. The ticket for participation in the World Cup he should have solved with the best game of his career - the European Cup game against Celtic.
It was a gala performance that the Innsbruckers offered against the Scots in Salzburg. Stering, Welzl and Oberacher had the game of their lives and scored a KO for Celtic within 30 minutes. This performance drew the attention of international observers to Franz Oberacher. As a result, however, he was no longer able to meet the expectations that had been placed in him in the national championship. In the 77/78 and 78/79 seasons he only scored a meager 6 goals in 35 and 29 appearances respectively, certainly not enough for a goal-getter. In his 6th appearance in the ÖFB team, he scored the gold goal in a 1-0 win in Israel. It was to be his only goal in a total of 8 games in the national team.
He played for 1.FC Nuremberg for 2 years. In the first year he was able to achieve promotion to the Bundesliga, and in his second year he was able to score 9 goals in 25 games. He then moved to the Netherlands for AZ 67 Alkmaar. In the winter of 1982/83 Oberacher returned to Austria and found his second home in Carinthia.
Until 1987 he played for Klagenfurt Austria, and in 1985 he even made two appearances in the national team. After his career, he initially went the other way, in contrast to many players who stayed in Tyrol after their careers. He stayed in Carinthia and took a job at the sporting goods manufacturer "PUMA". As a result, however, he returned to Natters.
With Innsbruck he was Austrian champion in 1975 and 1977. In 1975, 1978 and 1979 he won the ÖFB Cup with Innsbruck. He played 147 games for Innsbruck, scoring 29 goals.
