Not so jumpy, however Baumgartner preferred more to push the ball on the side when defending the goal or clearing the ball out of the 16 yards. Hubert Baumgartner kept goal for FK Austria Wien in the 1970s and was instrumental in reaching the 1978 European Cup Winners' Cup final in Paris. 189 competitive games, three league titles and a cup triumph vouch for the legend status.

Hubert Baumgartner began his career at SV Bad St. Leonhard in 1973. Just one year later he played in Vienna for Austria. With the violets he was soon able to break through the supremacy of the SSW Innsbruck and became Austrian champion three times in four years in 1976, 1978 and 1979. In particular, he put the club on the international stage: in 1977/78 he made it into the final of the European Cup of Cup Winners, with Hubert Baumgartner becoming a promotion hero as a "penalty killer". He saved on penalties in the quarter-finals against Hajduk Split – after a 1-1 home draw and now also 1-1 in Split– not only two penalties (Hajduk shot another one on the post), even during the game he had saved a penalty kick in the 42nd minute for the hosts at 1:0 for a corner (Vienna won the penalty series 3:0). Also in the semi-final against Dynamo Moscow, after a 2-1 away defeat, there was a penalty shoot-out in the second leg at the Praterstadion in Vienna on 12 April and he saved here too – in the last series of shots 4:4 – Alexander Bubnov 's decisive penalty, after which Alberto Martínez scored the 5:4. In the final on May 3, 1978, however, they were beaten by RSC Anderlecht 4-0. The next international highlight followed a year later. In the 1978/79 European Cup, Austria advanced to the semi-finals, where they narrowly missed out on Malmö FF. During his successful time in Austria, Hubert Baumgartner was called up to the squad for the Austrian national team a total of 25 times and also accompanied the team to the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. Ultimately, however, he came only once for an international match, on February 15, 1978 in a 1-1 draw against Greece. Hubert Baumgartner played for the oldest Spanish football club until 1983 and met his future wife during his time in Andalusia. This was followed by a return to the Austrian Bundesliga, where he was in goal for FC Admira/Wacker for another six seasons . In 1988 Hubert Baumgartner went to the Lower Austrian competitor VSE St. Pölten, with whom he was able to rise from the second division, but then injured himself so badly in a championship game in a collision with Christian Keglevits that he had to end his career.
