INFO:Typical Orchestrator type of player (including in the libero position), holding the back. Playing short and deep passes up front. Very elegant and slow. Great technique. In 1974, he was the footballer of the year in Hungary.
In 1968, he joined Újpest Dózsa from the Bp. Spartacus team. In the first season, he came second with the team in the championship and was also a member of the team that reached the final of the Vásárvárosok Cup in 1968-69. After that, he won the championship seven times in a row with Újpest and by the beginning of the 1970s, he started to become a permanent member of the team as a linebacker or midfielder. He appeared in the Hungarian national team 11 times between 1973 and 1975 and scored 1 goal.
His career began to rise and in 1973 he made his debut in the national team. He was one of the key players of the semi-final team in the 1973-74 Champions League European Cup season. They came up short against eventual winners Bayern Munich. This year, he was chosen as the footballer of the year in Hungary. He won the Hungarian People's Republic Cup three times with Újpest . In the 1975 final, Haladás from Szombathely already led 2-0 in the Népstadion, but József Horváth turned the ball around with three headers and won the cup. In the summer of 1975, MLSZ organized the Tournament of Champions for the first time, in which former champion teams could compete. Honvéd won the final against Újpesttel. Horváth caused a serious injury to Mihály Kozma during the match. He was heavily criticized by the press and, according to his own admission, this was one of the reasons he left the country. He went for one season to Rot-Weiss Essen before finally settling in the USA in 1978 and played for four seasons in the North American Soccer League (NASL) under the name Joe Horvath.
