INFO:An early modern offensive back who made raids up in the attack and made nice passes. As strong in the offensive as in the defensive. In later years he took on more of a defensive role. Roland was an international player early on, he was a right back with a secure heading game, had pace and was a good tackler. He tackles firmly, is sure of the ball and follows up in the attacks. Great swerve on crosses and free kicks from side. Fighter in defence, would kick the ball out or head it to goalkeeper. In the beginning, due to his time playing as a forward, he became an offensively oriented wing back (it was a bit new that the full-backs came up in the attacks). An interesting fact - he turned down Bayern in 1974, so they opted for Björn Andersson instead! How different his career might have been..
Andersson joined Malmö FF in 1968. With the club he was Swedish national champion three times and won the Svenska Cupen twice. In January 1975 he moved to league rivals Djurgårdens IF, for whom he was active for two seasons. In 1977 he returned to MFF, and became champion again. Coach Bob Houghton chose to move Magnus Andersson up as outside midfielder ahead of Roland. In addition, the cup was won twice and he reached the final of the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1978/79. In 1983 he ended his active career. He played 299 matches for the club in the Swedish championship, scoring six goals.
Andersson has been called up to the Sweden national team 19 times. He was part of the national team at the 1978 World Cup (it was the third time for Roland, after being close to a place in the World Cup squad both for México and West Germany), but didn't participate in any game.
