INFO:"My task was not to let a single bastard pass by" - says Krister Kristensson.
He was rock hard. Krister Kristensson scared the life out of the opponents. Strong leg power, strong physique and tremendously good in the air. He was like a block of granite. Centre back, in the 1978/79 season he was already old, slow, without stamina (had Division 3 pace), but reliable, very calm in defence, very strong and with great positioning. Malmö FF 's most A-team player with 626 games for the club during the 1960s and 1970s.
As a youngster, he was a wrestler, where he got good balance and coordination. At 16, he he was finally recruited by Malmö FF to play in the club's B team. He advanced to the A team and played his first matches during a tour of Nigeria in 1963. Kristensson played 348 games in the Allsvenskan 1963-1978. He became known for his hard play and huge winner's skull. Kristensson was one of those who symbolized Malmö FF's great team during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1978 he left Malmö to wind down in Trelleborgs FF but made a comeback in Malmö in the semi-finals of the European Cup for champions. MFF met Austria Wien and made it to the final, but then Kristensson was back in Trelleborg.
He played 38 A national matches from 1967-1972 and was in the World Cup squad in 1970. His national team career is said to have been partly spoiled by his unwillingness to act as a reserve during the World Cup in Mexico. He was substituted in the opening match and spoke negatively in the press. He was subsequently benched by the national team captain Orvar Bergmark. He played half of his international matches after the WC in 1970 but was not selected for the WC squad in 1974. Another contributing factor was that Malmö changed their playing system (not relying on libero's anymore). Kristensson considered retiring in 1973 but then got a new start under new coach Houghton. Krister Kristensson is a living MFF legend, nothing more and nothing less.
