He stood out in the position of left back, attracting the attention of teams such as Atlético de Madrid, Granada or Zaragoza, even making a trial with the club from Maño. But it was Betis who incorporated him in the summer of 1969. His debut with the Betis team was on August 25, 1969 at El Arcángel against the Austrian team Wiener SK, in a Montilla Moriles Trophy semi-final. His official debut would come on September 6 at Villamarín in a League match against Sporting de Gijón. As of 1972, he established himself as the undisputed starter of the Betis defense on the left side, even being summoned by the coach Ladislao Kubala in September 1974 for some training sessions of the national team. In the 1977 Cup final he was the team captain and therefore the one in charge of collecting the trophy at the end of the penalty shootout. In February 1979 he had a serious incident with the team coach García Traid, whom he criticized for questioning the professionalism of the squad in his statements to the press. As a consequence, he was separated from the squad. But García Traid's dismissal the following month restored the trust of new coach León Lasa, ending the season as a starter. However, in October 1979 he decided in agreement with the club to leave football. In his 11 seasons with Betis, Cobo played 237 league games, scoring 4 goals, 44 in the Cup, 3 in the European Cup Winners' Cup and 64 friendlies, in which he scored 1 goal. Spoiler: show |
