INFO:A versatile player, Nick Holmes was a natural left-sided player who could play as a full-back, central defender or midfielder. Player who was as reliable as he was skilful. A loyal one-club man, Holmes spent 18 years at Saints and was third in the all time appearances (543 games scoring 64 goals in all). One of the best pound-for-pound pros. Players loved playing alongside him and he was always terrific – he would get goals for the team, he could defend. It looked like he never had a bad game. In each of the seasons from 1975-76 to 1981-82, he never missed more than four League games.
He played in the 1976 FA Cup Final against Manchester United which Saints won 1-0, and also played and scored in the 1979 League Cup final against Nottingham Forest, which was lost 2-3. He became club captain in 1980 then in 1984, with a midfield that was probably the best in the club’s history, Southampton finished second in First Division.
A pelvic injury forced him to retire from the game in May 1987.
