INFO:
An impenetrable libero, whom it was not worth trying to beat one-on-one. Tactically verified play on the libero position. Flawless insurance. An unmistakable choice of position, a clean tackle of the ball, excellent heading. And he himself is fast, sharp, jumpy, perfectly coordinated. At the same time, his game is extremely correct and technical. Fan favourite and unquestioned authority in the team. Outwardly quite massive, he had excellent starting speed. Golubev also had excellent technique. Yuri Morozov once dreamed, as he said, of making a second Franz Beckenbauer out of Gosha. In 336 matches of the most difficult and militant USSR championship, the central defender received only 12 yellow cards. The beauty and pride of the Leningrad football of the 70s.

Vladimir Golubev was a high-class defender, one of the best in Soviet football of his time. Powerful, fast, he knew how to choose a position, he read the game well. Then there was huge competition in Soviet football, it was extremely difficult for a player not from Kyiv and not from Moscow clubs to earn an invitation to the USSR national team. But Valery Lobanovsky invited Golubev to the national team and persuaded him to go to Dynamo Kiev. When he was training in the national team, the Kyiv defenders, his competitors - Reshko, Fomenko, Matvienko, began to play rudely with him, crash into him. He told them: “Guys, don’t worry about your places in the squad, I won’t leave my native St. Petersburg!”

Experts complained about his insufficiently active participation in the attacking actions of the team, not always a clear first pass, but all this was so overlapped by his brilliant actions in defense. Moreover, his position as a free defender (or, as it is now fashionable to call it, “libero”) completely gave him a certain freedom in improvisation, because “by position” he was not rigidly attached to any opponent player. The penalty line, in fact, is his boundary. The slightest mistake of the last defender - and the forward goes one on one... The slightest violation, negligence - penalty. One must possess extraordinary skill and composure in order to prevent these fatal consequences. And Golubev was certainly good at this position!

He spent his entire career at Zenit (1968-1981). Considered one of the strongest defenders in the history of the team. In the mid-1970s, he was invited to Kiev and Moscow Dynamo , but decided to stay in Zenit, in which he played 384 matches (according to this indicator, he ranks fourth in the history of the club) and became the bronze medalist of the USSR championship 1980.

In 1977, he made his debut in official matches as part of the national team of the USSR in a friendly match against the national team of Poland. The following year, he played two more friendly games for the Soviet national team, after which he did not join its ranks.
