INFO:Fast, sharp, punchy and aggressive. Noted for his efficiency and scoring instinct, Yuriy Chesnokov was a born forward, one of the brightest talents of his time. He surprisingly combined sprint speed and filigree ball possession, and the blow was like a cannon. He was distinguished by speed and excellent coordination of movement. Not possessing great growth (167 cm) he possessed a high jump.
He made his debut in the masters competition in 1970, playing for the team "Volga" (Kalinin). Here, Chesnokov spent two seasons in the third division of the USSR, where he played 48 matches and scored 10 goals. In 1972, Volchok, who at that time was already working in the top league Lokomotiv (Moscow), invited Chesnokov to the Moscow team. Yuriy made his debut in the new club in the 1/8 final match of the Soviet Union Cup in March 1972, where he scored a goal in both matches against "Kryl Rad" (Kuibyshev). He made his debut in the top division of the USSR a month later in a game against Dynamo (Tbilisi) on April 4, and scored his first goal at the highest level in a match against SKA (Rostov-on-Don) on April 17. In his debut season in the Higher League, Chesnokov played 29 matches and scored eight goals, but the team took the penultimate 15th place and was relegated to the first league. Despite this, Chesnokov made it to the list of the 33 best football players of the season. In the first league, Chesnokov remained the main leader of the attacks of the Railwaymen, scoring 14 goals in 1973 and 20 goals in 1974, respectively, helping the team to take first place at the second attempt and return to the top league. In addition, in 1974, Chesnokov was again included in the list of "33 best", although he played in the second division.
Nevertheless, Chesnokov was not able to help Lokomotiv in the top division, because at the beginning of 1975, the new head coach of CSKA (Moscow) Anatoliy Tarasov wanted to get a promising striker in his team. Yuri was at that time a student of the Moscow Institute of Railway Transport Engineers and had a deferment from the draft, nevertheless, Chesnokov was drafted into the army right at Sheremetyevo Airport, where the youth team of the USSR returned after a tour of Southeast Asia. The young attacker hoped to serve a year of military service and return to Lokomotiv, but Chesnokov was forced to write a report for the assignment of the rank of junior lieutenant, without which they threatened to send the football player to undergo military service without the possibility of playing football. As a result, Chesnokov against his will remained in CSKA, forming an attack together with Boris Kopeykin and Leonid Nazarenko, playing 289 games for the team in all tournaments and scoring 87 goals, and twice more, in 1976 and 1977, he was on the list " 33 best", but the best season was the 1979 campaign, in which Chesnokov scored 16 goals in the Major League. At that time, CSKA did not shine in the USSR championship and mostly finished in the middle of the table, and the coaches often changed, so Yuriy never managed to win a single trophy. In 1983, Chesnokov was removed from the team and sent as the head of physical training to the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany.
On November 28, 1976, he made his debut in official matches as part of the USSR national team during the tour of South America against Argentina (0:0) at Monumental A few days later, Chesnokov played in the next match against Brazil (0:2) at Maracana. In total, during his career in the national team, which lasted 3 years, he played 13 matches in its uniform, scoring 5 goals.
