INFO:Former winger, Martens was the Kingdom's most offensive left-back. A very strong defender with an enormous physical ability. One of his strongest weapons was advancing forward. His way of playing was called spectacular - the unexpected sprints, improbable condition and the long breath. Martens will be the best left back in the country and even one of the better in Europe.
He was transferred from Anderlecht to Racing White in 1971, at the same time as Desanghere, as part of an exchange with Jean Dockx which also included a sum of money which enabled the Woluwean club to buy Jacques Teugels and Eddy Koens! First (and only) Racing White player to win the Golden Shoe in 1973. He was able to go to Feyenoord during this period, but the price that RWDM asked for was too high and they dropped out. Martens eventually became the Winner of the 1975 championship.
He played 26 times and scored 2 goals for the national team between 1971 and 1980, starting in a 1–0 friendly win against Luxembourg on 7 November 1971. Having been a non-playing squad member at the 1970 World Cup. Martens was part of the team for the 1972 and 1980 European Championships playing in the 1972 semi-final vs W.Germany, but he did not play a match in the latter tournament. He even captained the team a couple of times.
