INFO:He was the man who guards and takes out the opponent's playmaker. Tireless player, this allowed him to do this with great dedication and without hard means. Poortvliet is one of those players who makes others play better. The work he redefines, benefits Willy van der Kuijlen's playing. He stood out so much, especially in the 1977-1978 season in which the UEFA Cup is won, that he also deserved a place in the Dutch national team during the World Cup in Argentina. There, as one of the youngsters, he got a chance to prove himself. Pretty slow but with long legs and a fine technique. Not a lot of passing skills, he would mostly do short passes or leave the ball to the more creative players. Mostly left back - could also play on the right and in the middle (DMF and CMF, where he was shifted to in 79/80), and occasionally as a CB. Uses both legs well.
Born on September 21, 1955, in Zeeland, a province to the west of the Netherlands, he grew up at PSV Eindhoven. He was part of the successful PSV side that won a clutch of honours during his 12 seasons up to 1983. Poortvliet, who racked up 420 domestic appearances and 57 European matches for PSV, picked up no less than three Dutch league Eredivisie winners medals, two domestic cups and most notably a UEFA Cup winners medal after playing SC Bastia of France over two legs in the 1978 final.
He was capped 25 times for his country, most memorably winning six of those in the 1978 World Cup. Poortvliet made his debut in the Netherlands national football team on 20 May 1978, in a 0–1 friendly international match against Austria. He played six matches for the Orange squad at the 1978 World Cup, including the lost final against Argentina. He also took part in one match at the 1980 European Championship. He scored his only goal as an international player on 26 September 1979, the only goal of the match during an exhibition game at home to Belgium.
