Strong in duels, not too fast, a right footed left back who didn't use left so well. A good left back on the man (was running after Trossero and then Baronchelli)and in the heading game. Very lively, sometimes offensive, very skilled in the recovery.

A player entirely trained at A.J. Auxerre, Jean-Paul Noël is a product of the "patro" (which preceded the training center) led by Abbé Bonnefoy. Very good defender, able to evolve in all positions, he knew the youth teams before arriving in the first team while the A.J.A. was still playing in the second division. He participated in the 1979 France Cup campaign, the rise in 1980 and the first seasons in Division 1. Jean-Paul Noël marked the history of the club since he was the first Auxerrois to have been called up to the France team (selection in junior in January 1976).
