Very fast, technically gifted, useful on both wings (mostly on the right), he would always look to go inside the box. Best described as: "a flyer on the wing; A nice technique, lighting fast, good cross and enormous running ability". Used scissors to beat the opponent and roam the flank. Koster also liked to use his weaker foot but he wasn't so accurate. Due to a series of injuries, that prematurely cut short his career, and he did not get the appreciation he deserved as a player.

He played for amateur club VV Zierikzee in his youth. In 1977, Roda JC took over. Koster had already passed his twenties and is therefore considered a bit of a late bloomer. He stayed with Roda JC until 1979 and scored 12 times in 56 league games. In the 1978-1979 season, Roda surprisingly occupied the first place of the 11 Eredivisie clubs between 11-1978-8 - 4-1979-9. In the final phase, between rounds 28 and 34 (6-5-1979 - 10-6-1979) Roda had fallen back to position 5 in the Eredivisie, the lowest ranking that season; Koster then moved to PSV, where it became a period that was especially marked in the last 2 seasons 1981/82 and 1982/83 by many minor and serious injuries for Koster. From 1979 to 1983 he played 40 league games and 7 European games for PSV. With PSV, Koster successively reached third, fifth, second and third place in the Eredivisie.

Koster played a total of three times for the Netherlands in the second half of 1978, when Koster was under contract with Roda JC; against Iceland (3–0 home win), East Germany (3–0 home win) and West Germany (3–1 away loss). He did not score in these matches.
