He was not too fast, a bit slow moving, but unpredictable because he could score from any position. His nickname was "the Beech of the Jordan" and that name was not stolen. Nico was a hard working brute, the terror of all defenders and goalkeepers. He was big and strong and hard to put off the ball. He could get opponents' blood from under the nails. He started at DWS Amsterdam as a right back and joined the first team of FC Amsterdam in 1972. At FC Amsterdam, Jansen formed a very successful vanguard with right winger Gerard van der Lem and left winger Geert Meijer. His moment of glory as a striker was a match in the UEFA cup in San Siro against Inter Milan : 1-2 , he scored both goals. In three years of FC Amsterdam, Nico scored no less than 41 goals in 78 matches.
In 1975, as an Amsterdammer, he preferred Feyenoord Rotterdam to Ajax. Memorable was a match against Haarlem, where he scored five times. Feyenoord had started the 1975/76 season weakly, but would still come close to the national title in the course of the competition - partly because of Jansen's many goals. His third season at Feyenoord he did not play much, partly due to injury. Jan Boskamp brought him to Molenbeek in 1978. In five seasons, he scored 55 goals in 154 games, although both his knees were worn out. He then joined K. Londerzeel SK in the Fourth Division and finished his career with Boom FC.
Jansen once managed to play for the Dutch national team. That was on 30 May 1975, as a substitute in a 3-0 friendly loss in and against Yugoslavia. But this allowed him to apply for his membership for players with an entire international match.
