La Ling was a player who perfected the side dribble and used it frequently, together with scissors to pass his opponents. He wasn't very fast but when he would make a dribble he would get a great acceleration, trying to either finish it or get the ball back in the middle. If he wasn't opposed, he would create useful crosses. Excellent leaping ability and good header, but poor finishing skills overall. His shots did not have a lot of swerve and he sometimes tried to lob the keepers - however with a low mentality in the matches., as he admitted himself later on. This, together with his lack of consistency, selfishness and rare use of his weaker foot (decent accuracy), cost him a more lucrative career overall. Born in The Hague to a Chinese father and a Dutch mother, Tscheu La Ling began his professional career in his hometown, with Den Haag. He famously missed the 1975 KNVB final because he was caught drinking in a nightclub the night before. But with his double scissors and inimitable passing movements, he became best known as Ajax's right winger, where he became a cult hero. In 1975 he moved to Ajax Amsterdam, where he had his regular place on the right wing in the next few years, with Ajax often fielding two wingers of Far Eastern descent with the Indonesian-born Simon Tahamata and the Chinese-born Tscheu La Ling. In 1977, 1979 and 1980 he won the Dutch championship with Ajax and reached the EC semi-final in 1980. In his fourth championship title in 1982, he had lost his regular place to Gerald Vanenburg. He then played for Panathinaikos, Marseille, Feyenoord, finally finishing where it all started - in Den Haag in 1987. He played 14 games for the Netherlands national football team, scoring two goals. Tscheu La Ling also played in the qualification for the 1980 European Championship, but he was not in the squad for the tournament itself. He never got a regular place in the Dutch team, as he had two strong competitors with Johnny Rep and René van de Kerkhof. Ling will be remembered (especially by the supporters who were already present in the Lake in the late 70s, early 80s) as an inimitable ball artist, who only had to feel like it. If Ling was concentrated, he was the best right winger on the Dutch pitches. If that wasn't the case and Ling didn't feel like it, the supporters would blow their fingers. Ling was just Ling, a real crowd favorite! Spoiler: show |
