Very safe in the air, he liked to go out for 1 on 1 situations and was often successful in them. Playing rugby in his early years helped his ball control & catching ability. A giant of a man, but despite his size he possessed incredible agility and stunning reflexes. Corrigan was, quite literally, at 6’4” a giant among goalkeepers and a colossus for Manchester City at the highest level before a second tier spell with Brighton towards the end of his playing career. After taking over from Harry Dowd, Corrigan was a near permanent fixture in goal for Manchester City between 1970 and 1983, winning a European Cup Winners’ Cup medal at the end of his debut season in 1970. One of the most memorable matches that Joe played an important part in was the League Cup Final against Newcastle on February 28th in 1976 at Wembley in front of 100,000 fans, the game ending 2-1 to win the Cup. He was an FA Cup finalist in 1981 too, losing to Tottenham. But for his career coinciding with Peter Shilton and Ray Clemence, he would surely have won more than the nine England caps he accumulated between 1976 and 1982. He ended up being the 3rd option in the 1980 Euros and 1982 World Cup. In total Corrigan made 592 appearances for City, a club record for a goalkeeper, and he was City’s Player of the Year three times (1976, 1978 and in 1980.) Spoiler: show |
