INFO:A great adventurer of French football in the 1970s, sometimes described as a mercenary, Jacky Vergnes is among the best scorers in the history of the French championship, with more than 150 goals. A hard-hitting number 9 with a somewhat unstable temperament, powerful and dexterous, he was a solid, opportunistic striker, with an excellent head game. Still, Jacky didn't have an extraordinary physique in terms of speed or quickness, but he possessed that rare quality of feeling the game and always being where it was needed when it was needed. Right foot, left foot, head, ass, knee, everything is good to take for this goal hunter. He has made the happiness of several mid-table clubs, which he has sometimes taken to the top, such as Nimes, with whom he played the European games or Laval that he will help to stay in the league in 1977. Often moving, never winning anything. He still won the France title in 1979 with RC Strasbourg, although he only played four games of the season. Ranked as a 72nd player by SoFoot in French D1 history.
His athletic qualities predisposed him to rugby, endowed with exceptional physical means and a good ball strike, he was spotted in 1966 by SO Montpellier. After two years he joined Red Star FC. Positioned as a winger, while he likes the A position of center forward, Jacky Vergnes is languishing in the Paris region despite his 11 goals in two seasons. Kader Firoud, the prestigious coach of Nîmes Olympique, had spotted this striker. Jacky Vergnes arrives in the Gard club in 1970. He will know for 4 seasons the consecration by playing 118 league games of France and scoring 72 goals. This efficiency will take him his only selection as a starter in the tricolor jersey on September 8, 1971 against Norway where he will score a goal (with a lob with finesse). Plagued by financial problems, the crocodiles had to part with their star player during the 1974 season, who had just initial a new contract. He left for Bastia. On the Island of Beauty, Jacky Vergnes will only stay a season and a half but will grow his goal capital with 20 complementary units. In 1975, Stade de Reims recruited him to associate him with their new pearl Carlos Bianchi. But far from being complementary, the two men are in fact designed at the forefront of the attack. Jacky Vergnes is exiled on the wings and despite his 11 goals in 26 games will spend a season in the shadows of the Argentine goaleador and his 34 goals. Jacky Vergnes does not seem to be satisfied with this situation and will ask his leaders to change air. These, certainly annoyed by the whims of their center forward will loan him for the 1976/1977 season to Laval, the newly promoted. The surprise is total. One of the most prolific centre-forwards in the league for almost 10 years, joined a starless team condemned for many to relegation. The audience of Le Basser also remains on its reserve in the face of this player with the reputation of mercenary. From the first day the new number 9 will demonstrate that he has lost nothing of his efficiency by scoring 19 goals. Back from loan at Reims he was immediately transferred to Racing Club de Strasbourg managed by Gilbert Gress. In Alsace he won his only title of France champion in 1979 and stayed two seasons. Playing little during the title season because in delicacy with the coach Strasbourg he left in 1979 for Bordeaux after having had some touches abroad. After only one year, Jacky Vergnes at 31 years old may feel the time has come for the last contract and a comeback to its Hérault roots. He signed for Montpellier La Paillade SC. From his first season, Jacky Vergnes brings his sense of purpose and finished better scorer of Division 2 group B with 19 goals. For the 1980/1981 season, he reunited ten years after his former coach Kader Firoud. Under His management he scored 14 goals and allowed the Montpellier club to reach the elite for the first time in its young history. This season in Division 1 will be the last for the big Jacky who plays little and will hang up his cleats at the end of 1981. He ended an exceptional career made up of 328 matches in Division 1 and 153 goals (19th* all-time leading scorer).
It is often said that France lacked pure strikers in the early-mid 70s to qualify for a major tournament (WC 1970, 1974, Euro 1972, 1976). Perhaps if Jacky received more caps.....
