His grit and physical impact allowed playmakers to be freed from these defensive tasks. Not too fast, Fernandes had decent long shooting, very decent passing skills and technical abilities. A hard worker, he had become one of the indispensable cogs of the teams. In fact, specialists noticed his importance in the team when he was away. Jean Fernandez was considered the lung of the team. He started playing football at Portiragnes before joining AS Béziers in 1972. At 17 and a half, he signed his first professional contract with the Hérault club AS Béziers, and discovered the Second Division. His good performances, especially during a round of the Coupe de France which saw Béziers eliminate OM, attracted the Phocaean recruiters, who signed him in 1975. At the end of his contract in June 1980, he left the Marseille club relegated to D2 and joined the Girondins, the same year as Marius Trésor, René Girard, François Bracci and Aimé Jacquet. He managed to impose himself at the sentry post and was one of the great craftsmen of the good 1980-1981 season. Despite the arrival of Jean Tigana in the summer of 1981, he continued to be frequently lined up by Aimé Jacquet. He left the Gironde after two good years, aware that his playing time would decrease. But his future coaching career was strongly inspired by the concepts of Aimé Jacquet. During his time, he played a total of 209 games for Marseille and Bordeaux in Division 1, including 142 (one goal) for Olympique and 67 for the Girondins. With Marseille, he also won the French Cup in 1976. With the French Olympic team he took part in the 1976 Olympic Games and was eliminated in the quarterfinals by the eventual winners, the DDR.
