A tenacious, physical defensive midfielder with decent technique and passing abilities. Deutschmann would mostly play short passes, sometimes delivering a nice through pass. He would sometimes appear in the 16m from the back, as a part of Strasbourg's tactics that won them the league in 1979.An extremely precious midfielder for Strasbourg, specializes in the hardest tasks, he is always there. A kind of a leech, plunged into anonymity. He liked taking shots from the back with his strong shot, however not so accurate.

He trained at RC Strasbourg from 1969 and played there as a professional from 1971 to 1985, playing a total of 339 Division 1 or Division 2 league games with 14 goals scored. With Strasbourg, he won Division 2 in 1977 and became France champion in 1979.
