An agile player who ran a lot, he solved his tactical tasks well, he kept the ball, he dribbled finely. Technical, good passer who used his two legs almost equally and liked to try out long shots sometimes.

He started his career in 1962 with the local Székesfehhérvár VT Vasas, later Videoton, where he played in the youth teams. In 1964, Lajos made his debut as a striker in the first team. In 1968 he moved to Ferencvárosi TC, whose green-white colours he would defend until 1974. With Ferencváros, he won the Hungarian Cup twice, in 1972 and 1974, and became vice-champion of Hungary four times. However, he was accused of an unsportsmanlike lifestyle, resulting in a loss of form, and was sidelined at FTC in 1974. He then joined Vasas SC where he wanted to prove himself. However, the team did not run and Lajos stayed there for only one season, after which he moved to Bp. Volan, where Grosics Gyula was chairman. He would play there for two years. In the mid-70s, however, he got into trouble with the Communist Party and started looking for a contract outside Hungary. Kű knew that this meant his end with the national team and that he would not be eligible to play for a year. But he took the step anyway. In 1977, Lajos, through a police chief, was able to obtain a Yugoslav passport and left Hungary to enter the 'free world' via Subotica in present-day Serbia. He left under his own name under the guise that he could buy beautiful leather football boots from Adidas on the market and thus play better. Via Yugoslavia and Italy he ended up in Switzerland. After staying there for a while, there was interest in him from Servette Geneva, but the International Football Association indeed suspended him for one year.

In 1978 he ended up in Belgium, where he would play for the colours of Club Brugge and acquired a rather mythical status. This was due to Michel Van Maele, then mayor of Bruges, and board member at Club Brugge, who knew him from the Euro 1972, and had seen him in a friendly match between a local team from Kortrijk and a military team. However, due to circumstances, he would only finish two games there. One of them was a semi-final for the Belgian Cup against SC Charleroi. 4 days before that match, Club had many injured players, including Paul Courant. Kü Lajos played his first official match for Club, losing 3–1. Under coach Ernst Happel he became Belgian champion in 1978 and also played the final match at Wembley against Liverpool in the European Cup on 10 May 1978 (lost 1-0). Happel then surprised by drafting Kű Lajos, who had just returned after a year of inactivity and had not yet played a match at the highest level. However, he played a more than creditable match in this final.

Afterwards, Lajos went on to play one year (1980-1981) in the United States of America with the Buffalo Stallions (MISL), where Eusébio, the Portuguese star, and the former Újpest player Horváth Jóská also played. In that period it was the heyday for American football, and many excellent players crossed the ocean to the new world: such as Pele, Beckenbauer, Cruyff and our François 'Swat' Van der Elst. Then homesickness brought him back to Western Europe. But in Belgium, the transfer market was closed and Austrian FC Eduscho Eisenstadt, located close to the Hungarian border, was able to connect him thanks to fan money. At that club he found Hungarian former teammates Karsai and Pusztai László. In the 1983-1984 season, hampered by a number of injuries, he completed his active football career as a player/coach with the Austrian FC Mönchof.

In 1972, he played 8 senior international matches. He is also a member of the silver medal-winning national team at the Munich Olympics and our national team that finished 4th at the European Championships in Belgium, where he made his mark with his penalty goal. He left the country in 1977 and, after a one-year ban, played away from home in 1978, signing in Belgium, America and Austria
