INFO:In 1974-75, the RWDM was still fighting for the title four days from the end. Until this match at the Cercle de Bruges where the people of Brussels were swept away by a man: Benny Nielsen. Hired as an attacker, the Dane distinguished himself on the right flank of the midfield due to the long unavailability of the Dutchman Veenstra, being an attacking right midfielder. His changes of pace, his sense of goal and the last pass worked wonders. Technically very good. Not an adept at the hard work in training, but he was there in the match. Like so many others, stolen by Anderlecht. Moving to Anderlecht in 1977, Nielsen was one of the architects of Mauves' victory in the 1978 Cup final against Austria Vienna. Nielsen played almost every game and was often good for a goal. He also became champion of Belgium in 1981. That season, Nielsen left for Saint-Étienne in France.
As a young player, Nielsen started with the youth of Brederöd IF, Frederikvaerk IF and then AB Köbenhavn. At the latter club, Nielsen also made it into the A-team. In 1971 Nielsen went abroad to play football at Cercle Brugge. Nielsen could often be found in midfield but could be used as a striker. The right winger moved to the RWDM of trainer Felix Week in 1974. In his first season for the Belgian club, Nielsen immediately became champion. In the end, 88 matches, 25 goals for RWDM. He was a part of the middle, being on the right end side, with Boskamp center and Polleunis more to the left as an attacking midfielder. Nielsen had that dummy dribble with shoulder and would usually go into the middle to take a shot. But he was sometimes too static, waiting for the ball. Not a winger who dribbles past an opponent or crosses much. He also occasionally took set-pieces, possessed a strong shot with both legs.
Benny Nielsen had 28 caps and 7 goals for the National team, playing a straight 10 years from 1970-1980.
