INFO:Mobile attacker, striker or attacking midfielder. Enthusiastic, very flexible with a great leap and header. Sharp, fast, always menacing, dynamic, and with scoring ability. Very attractive football player, fine technique, kicking technique and was an efficient striker with a powerful kick. An elegant striker, with enormous running ability, lots of drive in his play and actions, always threatening.
Wellens went through the youth series of VC Westerlo. In 1971 he was recruited by Lierse SK as a striker. In 1974, Wellens went to play football at RWDM. He was able to immediately celebrate the national title in his first season with the young merger team. RWDM finished in the top of the ranking in the following years and was therefore also able to play in a European context. In the 1976/77 UEFA Cup , the team reached the semi-finals. After Feyenoord was previously defeated, Athletic Bilbao was too strong. Wellens was the team's top scorer in Europe with ten goals. He continued to play there until 1978 when the team gradually became less successful, scoring 40 goals in 130 matches. In 1978 Wellens moved to Standard Liège. In 1980 Standard finished in 2nd place and in 1981 the Belgian Cup and the Belgian Supercup were won. In that year, Standard was able to reach the quarter-finals of the 1980/81 UEFA Cup, losing to 1. FC Köln. Wellens played 69 matches for Standard and scored 17 goals.
Wellens joined Club Brugge in 1981. In five years in Bruges he won the 1986 Cup and the Supercup in Belgium, scoring a total of 56 goals in 154 games. In this successful 1986 year, Wellens moved on to Antwerp to join the Beerschot VAV, but could not win a title from that point on. 1989-1990 he played a year at KV Kortrijk and in the 1990/1991 season he returned to RWD Molenbeek. From 1991 to 1993 he was under contract with Cercle Brugge . In the 1993/1994 season, Wellens ended his career at KRC Mechelen.
Between 1976 and 1981, Wellens was selected 11 times for the Belgian national football team and played 7 games with the team. He was in the pre-selection of the team that took part in the 1980 European Football Championship in Italy but was ultimately not selected for a match. Only an injury prevented him to take part in the 1982 World Cup...
