INFO:
Rettensteiner was a reliable goalkeeper with excellent reaction and positioning, good coverage, playing mostly on the line.

The Salzburg native put on his first goalkeeper gloves in a fighting team in Bischofshofen with the local regional league club. In 1967 he moved to Innsbruck and dueled with the former FC Wacker Innsbruck goalkeeper Leo Tschenett for the position. His qualities were soon recognised by the Black and Greens, and in the years that followed, Herbert wore the number one at the Tivoli. In 1970, Herbert won his first title with the Innsbruck Wackerians. He was celebrated as the cup winner by the black and green fans. In the following European Cup year of the Innsbruck team, the Pongau native experienced a great moment in the glorious history of FC Wacker Innsbruck live. At the venerable Estadio Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, they defeated Real Madrid 1-0 with a cruel goal. Before that, the Innsbruck team was guided through the impressive catacombs of the Bernabeu Stadium. The many large and small trophies of the "white ballet" could not intimidate the men from the Tyrolean mountains and so the sensation was created. The second leg was lost at the Tivoli due to two late goals from Madrid. The 18,000 fans at the Tivoli celebrated anyway. In the 1970/71 season, things also went very well for Rettensteiner and his Wacker team. After a glorious season and a final 4-2 victory at namesake Wacker Wien, Herbert Rettensteiner and his teammates returned home from Vienna with the championship trophy. The game was broadcast live via radio at the Breinösse stage in Innsbruck's Maria-Theresienstraße. At five o'clock in the morning, Rettensteiner, Ettmayer and Co were welcomed by tens of thousands of Black and Green fans. It was insane. A farmer from Unterland even painted his beloved cows black and green.

New season, new luck. Everything really became new at Wacker Innsbruck. The Black and Greens entered into a joint venture with the Werksportgemeinschaft Wattens. Since WSG Wattens was also first-class at that time, Innsbruck was able to have a high-quality squad of players. With Konclia and Herbert Rettensteiner, they suddenly had two current national goalkeepers. As in the national team, Herbert Rettensteiner constantly alternated with Friedl Koncilia in goal in Innsbruck. Nevertheless, he was able to celebrate his second championship title with Wacker. In total, Rettensteiner was in goal for Wacker Innsbruck 132 times. He didn't score a goal and unfortunately it is no longer possible to determine how many he has prevented. It was certainly enough and with a cup victory and two championship titles, Herbert was and remains one of the greats in the FCW family.

After his second title with the Black and Greens, Rettensteiner moved to VÖEST Linz in 1972/73. Somewhat surprisingly, he won his third title next season with the factory athletes. Herbert played in Linz until 1975, before he moved to Salzburg, Austria. In 1982, Herbert Rettensteiner ended his active career with the Violets and remained there goalkeeper coach until 2005. There were 71 first division games with Vöest Linz and 163 with Salzburger Austria - even scoring 2 goals from the penalty spot!

Rettensteiner was also proud of 15 games in the national team during his active career. However, he experienced one of his most bitter hours. In decisive World Cup qualifying match between Austria and Sweden for the 1974 World Cup in Germany on 13.11.1973 in Gelsenkirchen. Sandberg went through, ran alone on Rettensteiner who threw himself in front of his legs – blaming a penalty kick. Bo Larssen converted to make it 2-0 for the Swedes who went through to the 74 World Cup. The dream of the World Cup is over – and Rettensteiner is the nation's bogeyman. "They insulted me on all the pitches. There were even death threats. But that's all yesterday's news anyway," said Rettensteiner.
