INFO:
"I'm the only Austrian who wears his backpack in front". Ettmayer also always dealt directly with the fact that his weight, even by the standards of the time, did not correspond to the typical image of a competitive athlete. In an interview with the trade magazine "11 Freunde", he once explained that he had "always weighed between 83 and 85 kilos" during his active time at a height of 1.72 meters. "I just like to eat sweet, and I especially like to eat sweet. Cake, ice cream, chocolate," Ettmayer was quoted as saying.

Yes, he was a Buffy (coach Leopold Stastny, who would become his mentor as the future team boss, would give him this nickname – a Czech or Slovak name that meant something like fat girl.), Johann Ettmayer, from head to toe, so to speak, but in this left-footer there was not only power, but also an enormous amount of feeling. His centimeter-precise, wide (steep) assists were celebrated just as much as his hard-hitting shots were feared – first in the domestic league, then at VfB Stuttgart and Hamburger SV, where, as a Viennese from Tyrol, he became a crowd favorite among the Swabians as well as on the waterfront.

Very technical player (but very slow as well), Ettmayer was a field general who didn't have a huge radius of movement, mostly in the center and coming back to take the ball from the defence or goalkeeper. He possessed a killer strong left foot, which he would use to constantly try out long shots, long balls and low through passes. He was a set piece specialist and a reliable penalty taker. His short passes and dribbles were excellent, even though he didn't dribble a lot. Against stronger opponents, he would hardly make a decent dribble, but still managed to use his technique and passing skills to find open players. In his earlier years, more competitive, even tackling, but overall a true orchestrator from the back type of player.

Ettmayer began his career in 1963 at FK Austria Wien, where he scored one goal in seven state league games until his move to Tyrol in 1966 to FC Wacker Innsbruck. At Innsbruck he became a crowd favourite because of his wealth of tricks. In the 1970 cup final against ASK Linz at the Bundesstadion Südstadt, he scored the winning goal in the 53rd minute in front of 1800 spectators and in 1971 he also won the championship with FC Wacker. These were the first national successes in the club's history.

The following season, he moved to VfB Stuttgart, where he was feared for his hard-hitting shots despite his heavyweight (85 kg at 1.72 m). He scored a total of 34 goals in 97 games for VfB. On 26 January 1974, Ettmayer scored 10,000th Bundesliga goal in a game against Eintracht Frankfurt. This goal was voted Goal of the Month by the ARD-Sportschau. Johann Ettmayer had a legendary dialogue with VfB Stuttgart's coach at the time, Albert Sing. When this Ettmayer opened up "Buffy, you don't play, you're too fat" he replied "I've always been like that." Sing justified his decision with the remark "There are pictures of you when you were thinner", to which Ettmayer countered: "They were probably made with a narrow-film camera." VfB qualified for the UEFA Cup in 1973 by finishing sixth, but otherwise belonged to mediocrity. In 1974, Ettmayer replaced Reinhold Zech as VfB captain. He managed to reach Uefa Cup semi-finals in 1974, before losing to eventual winner - Feyenoord. After VfB's first relegation from the Bundesliga in 1975, the player and the club parted ways.

From 1975 to 1977 he played for Hamburger SV, making 27 Bundesliga appearances for the Hanseatic club, where he was not without controversy due to his weight problems, in which he scored four goals. HSV won the DFB Cup in 1976 under coach Kuno Klötzer, although Ettmayer only played in the first two rounds of the competition. In 1977, when HSV won the 1977 European Cup Winners' Cup with a 2-0 victory over RSC Anderlecht, they only played in the preliminary round match against ÍB Keflavík, which Hamburg won 3-0. After the end of the season, he moved to Swiss second division club FC Lugano for one season. He was the only full professional in the semi-amateurs, and so he was bored during the day, because training only took place in the evening. With the Ticino, he finished third with three points behind the two promotion places. From 1978 to 1981 he played in the Second Bundesliga Group South for Freiburger FC. In 67 games, he scored 14 goals for the 1907 German champions, who were in midfield at the time and qualified for the following season's single-track second Bundesliga in 10th place in 1981 – the last highlight in the club's history; In 1982, FC was relegated and said goodbye to professional football. From 1981 to 1983 he finished his playing career with the amateur club 1. Göppinger SV, for whom he was active as a player-coach at that time, with interruptions and found a job as a dispatcher for paperbacks in the magazine trade through the club sponsor.

Between 22 September 1968 and 19 November 1975, Ettmayer played 30 games for the Austrian national team, in which he failed to score a goal. From October 1970 to November 1971, he was active as a player in all six qualifying matches in Group 6 for the 1972 European Football Championship against Italy, Sweden and Ireland.

Ettmayer, or rather: the unmistakable Buffy, was still one of those football originals who are unfortunately slowly dying out. They were and are relics from another time when you could and were still allowed to be on a first-name basis..
