He wasn't very technically good, but possessed great fighting spirit, and fine acceleration to catch fast wingers and forwards of the time. A more defensive fullback, he was not afraid to go into tackle, but he was late in responses and tackles sometimes. From time to time he would burst on a run forward or join the attack and provide a solid cross, but more often Pospischil was a type of player who performed his task defensively and gave the ball to organizers and playmakers of Austria Wien and the national team. Günther Pospischil began his football career at SV Zeiselmauer, from where he moved to nearby SC Tulln in the second-tier Regionalliga East. In 1974 he was poached by Vienna Austria as the second Tullner after Alfons Dirnberger. In defense he subsequently played primarily with Erich Obermayer, as well as Josef and Robert Sara. Günther Pospischil became Austrian champion in his first season, and from 1978 to 1981 he celebrated four more championships in a row with the Violets. This collection of titles is completed by two ÖFB Cup victories. Internationally, Günther Pospischil reached his peak with the club by reaching the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1978, but in that season he was pushed out of the starting eleven by Ernst Baumeister, so he did not play in the Prinzenparkstadion. In 1979, with him as a regular player - Ernst Baumeister had moved up to midfield - he made it into the semi-finals of the European Cup for the national champions. Following the European Cup successes, Günther Pospischil made his international debut for the Austrian national team on August 29, 1979 in a 4-0 win against Norway. He subsequently made a total of five appearances in the team under Karl Stotz. Even in his early days at Austria, he played a total of ten games for the Austrian amateur national team as an amateur from 1975 to 1976, including the qualifying games for the 1976 Olympic Games. After his successful time at Wiener Austria, Günther Pospischil went to Vienna in the Second Division in 1981. As a result of reforms, they were promoted to third place in the 1st division in 1982, but were unable to stay in the league. So Günther Pospischil returned to SV Zeiselmauer. Spoiler: show |
