BalancedINFO:Reiner was an interceptor, speedy, with huge fighting spirit and good sense of timing, who could often be found in attack and try out long shots. Not many attackers could get past "Holli". And if they did, then it was their own fault, because they would then have to take on Haebermann. This was no pleasure for the strikers. Friedhelm and Reiner understood each other blindly on the pitch and shut down the centre. That certainly saved Bernd Franke countless saves and many goals conceded. Although Hollmann was one of the best defenders in Germany during his playing days, he was denied a place in the national team. But there was no sign of disappointment: "I was good and didn't need to hide, but Franz Beckenbauer and Georg Schwarzenbeck played in my position. That was a completely different ball game. Even Klaus Fichtel of Schalke 04, who was a fantastic player, didn't stand a chance against them. I would have had to move to Bayern back then and displace one of them to get a realistic chance in the national team,"
"Holli" was a real boy from the Pütt and a real joker. Hard-hitting in the game, a model of reliability and equipped with a hard, precise shot. He was a very important part of the Braunschweig team, which missed out on the championship trophy by just one point in 1976/77. He was a junior national team player and Olympic participant in 1972.
Rainer Hollmann started his career at Eintracht Duisburg and then moved to Rot-Weiss Oberhausen, with whom he also played in the Bundesliga. When Oberhausen was relegated together with Eintracht in 1973, the Blue and Yellows were able to sign the former youth international. It was to be the beginning of a long relationship: Rainer Hollmann played 11 seasons for the "Lions" and was a regular at the stopper post in all these years!
From 1973/74 to 1983/84 he played 259 Bundesliga games (23 goals), 13 games in the 2nd Bundesliga North (0), 33 Regionalliga games (2) and 9 promotion games (1). During his time, there were two (re-)promotions to the Bundesliga (1974, 1981) and one relegation (1980). He was also part of the time when the Blue and Yellows under coach Zebec showed the supposedly most beautiful and attractive football in Eintracht's Bundesliga history (1975-1977).
Hollmann was relatively dangerous for a stopper of the 70s. Remarkably, he scored three of his 23 Bundesliga goals (between 1975 and 1977) against FC Bayern Munich. Not even many strikers can say that!
The most curious story about Rainer Hollmann took place on the 1st matchday of the 1977/78 season at the Betzenberg. Eintracht were leading 1-0 in the away game at 1. FC Kaiserslautern when referee Burgers moved a foul committed on a Lautern player well outside the penalty area to the 16 and awarded a penalty kick twenty minutes before the end. In the course of the heated discussion about this, the referee knocked Hollmann down with an elbow check. Hollmann was immediately unconscious and only woke up minutes later in the ambulance. There had never been anything like it in the Bundesliga before! Eintracht lost the match without him 2-1 thanks to the penalty and another goal five minutes before the end of the game. After his playing days, Hollmann embarked on a coaching career.
His greatest successes were achieved in non-European countries.
