Excellent in man-marking (tormented Keegan in 1981), he was slow, but with strong, long legs, good positioning & heading. Strong in duels, great ball winning skills and overall high fighting spirit. Very decent technique and dribble, would often stride on the right side of attack to cross or go inside. Lüdi started his football career with FC Grenchen. In 1976 he was promoted to the first team and in the 1976/1977 season he made his debut for the club in the Swiss second division. In 1977 he moved to FC Zürich. In the 1978//1979 season, he go the Swiss vice-championship with the club from Zurich. He achieved another success in the 1980/1981 season, when he became the national champion and Cup runner-up. In 1981, he was named Swiss Footballer of the Year. In the 1981/1982 season, he finished 3rd in the league with FC Zürich. He played for FC Zürich, playing 224 league games and scoring 17 goals, until the end of the 1987/1988 season. In 1988, Lüdi moved to Neuchâtel Xamax. He played there for a season. In 1989 he moved to second-division FC Baden. In 1991 he finished his sports career there. The defender made 317 competitive appearances for FC Zurich between 1977 and 1988. Lüdi made his debut for Switzerland on 5 May 1979 in a 0–2 defeat to the DDR in St. Gallen in a Euro 80 qualifier. He also played in the 1982 World Cup, Euro 84 and 1986 World Cup qualifiers.
