Attack-MindedINFO:Nicknamed the Golden Helmer (Head), mainly due to his aerial prowess. Tonnel was an effective goalscorer with Troyes, who, besides having a good header, was able to shoot with both feet well. An emblematic figure of the TAF (Troyes Aube Football).
This striker, who played 140 games in the First Division (51 goals) also finished top scorer in the Second Division with Troyes in 1973 (31 goals out of the 71 scored by the team). He was then called up by Ştefan Kovács, coach of the France team, to the France B team and played, on 24 March 1974, a friendly match against Luxembourg won 3:0. At the beginning of the following season, on September 7, 1974, Ştefan Kovács retained him in the France team which faced Poland in a friendly match. However, he did not come into play in this match, which ended in the defeat of the French by 2:0. It was his only appearance for the national team.
In the first season in D1, he finished in 5th and in 1974/75 Tonnel was the 4th scorer of the French D1.
He played also for RCP-Sedan, Mouzon, Strasbourg, Rennais & Reims.
