In that championship, guarded by an iron defense, Abelardo conceded only 19 goals in the 30 games of the tournament. He was one of those goalkeepers who didn’t use gloves. They were in fashion, but he said that they were uncomfortable for him and that he had better contact with the ball with his bare hands. As a goalkeeper, he gave an important sense of security to his defence. He worked very hard for the team. Abelardo was not very good at crosses (pretty poor at judging them actually), he didn't have a huge jump but due to his feline reactions his parades covered a great amount of goal and was hard to beat. Liked to go out of the line. He did not poses a strong shot and mostly others were taking the GK kicks. He was an agile goalkeeper, effective in the air and impassable from angles. But beyond his qualities as a goalkeeper, he was a leader for his defense. Abelardo gained fame as a penalty saver. Endowed with exceptional reflexes, of the maximum penalties saved, especially decisive was the one that stopped the Barcelona striker Martí Filosía at the Camp Nou (0-2), due to the final tie on points in the fight for the title. During the early 70s he was called up several times with the Spanish National Team, although the hegemony of José Ángel Iribar in goal for Spain, prevented him from making his debut. Spoiler: show |
