INFO:
A very unusual centre forward, Arieta was a very mobile striker who would drop to mid or on the side and often play with his back. He was quick, not very technical nor did he possess a good jump - as a matter of fact he didn't use his header a lot. However he was very unpredictable in his movements and had a great response and feel of where the ball will be, allowing him to score some very important goals throughout his career. He was quick, a fighter, liked to cross the ball as well from the right wing (where he even played once for the national team). However his limitations were that the left foot was almost non-existent, his overall technique was pretty poor as well as his passing range and the overall feel was that he just wasn't aggressive enough.

At Athletic Club he was known as Arieta II because his older brother, Eneko Arieta, was also playing in the team when he was promoted to the first team in 1964. He made his debut on September 13, 1964, in a victory against Elche (2-1).In his first season, he snatched the starting spot from his brother Eneko. As the seasons went by, she formed one of the most recognized forwards of the club along with Argoitia, Uriarte, Clemente and Rojo. With Athletic he won two Generalissimo Cups in 1969 and 1973, scoring goals in both finals. His career-best was 12 goals in the 1964–65 season.

In the 1974-75 season he joined Hércules Club de Fútbol where, in his first season, under the orders of Arsenio Iglesias, the Herculanese team achieved the best classification in its history in the First Division (5th place). After one more season in Alicante, he ended his football career.

He was a senior international for Spain in seven games, scoring three goals. He made his debut on February 11, 1970 against Germany (2-0), scoring both goals for the Spanish team. On January 12, 1972 he played his last game with the national team, against Hungary, scoring the only goal of the match. Arieta appeared in 358 games in all competitions, netting 83 times for Athletic.
