He played 291 official games scoring 4 goals. He started playing in the position of defensive midfielder, next to Jesús Glaría. That was because when he arrived at the team, the center back was Griffa, who was probably the most charismatic player with the most leadership capacity in the history of Atletico. Later, for economic reasons the club sold Griffa to Español, and Jayo went on to play as a central defender. Jayo stood out for his versatility since he played as a full-back, centre-back, midfielder, left-sided midfielder and centre-forward, although, above all, he stood out as a centre-back who was a marker of category and dedication. He could also play lateral when Melo couldn't, while Ovejero-Iglesias would be in the center of defence. A great team player who became a luxury wild card. He was a very strong and confident player, a bit slow, good placement, forceful. Intuitive, with a great sense of anticipation arriving in advance of the crosses. He liked to take the ball under control, had some bursts forward and an unpredictable dribble. Overall, he was a tugh, build up libero from the back. Not too technical nor agile, he also had a weak play with his left leg. The arrival of Cacho Heredia to Atletico, displaced him out of the team. He spent practically his entire career at this club, although he was initially loaned to Langreo and, after recovering from a knee injury, he played his last two years at Sevilla CF. As a player he won three Leagues (1965/66, 1969/70 and 1972/73) and two Generalissimo Cups (1965 and 1972), all with Atlético de Madrid. Spoiler: show |
