In 1969 he made his debut for the national team against Finland in the first game of the Kubala era and the last under Paco Gento. In 1973 he decided to sign for Atlético de Madrid with the aim of winning the league, and he arrived at the Madrid club in the prime of his career. Curiously, Cruyff's arrival at Barça gave the Catalans the title that same year. In 1977 he won the long-awaited league title with the colchoneros. Winner of Zamora trophy in 1973 (together with Barca's biggest unbeaten run until Victor Valdez in 2011) & in 1977. Miljan Miljanic compared him to Beara - fast, explosive. Fantastic cat-like reflexes, indeed very speedy and commanding of the area. Great catching ability, punching the ball only when necessary. Liked to go into opponents' legs for the ball, as well as to go out of the goal for clearance. He had very solid outbound game with his throw that would open up a counter attack. Could also very easily find players with long passes. The Andalusian goalkeeper stood out for his agility, security and bravery. Very confident & regular, he was one of Spain's main goalkeepers at the time, but never had due recognition by the National team (only 5 caps) and mainly due to Iribar's domination in front of the goal. Spoiler: show |
