That's why he was able to play and perform very well in different positions. He stood out the most as a central defender/marker because against the big and corpulent forwards he beat them with anticipation and speed and against the fast ones he either equaled them in running or the positioning allowed him to cut. He didn't score goals, he didn't manufacture them, he didn't wear the captain's armband, he used to have good scores and even some of his marking (such as on Cruyff & on G.Muller in the 1974 final) bordered on excellence. A tall, elegant, sober, physically prodigious player with a more than acceptable technique he was indisputable for all the coaches who passed through the club in the eleven years he remained on the banks of the Manzanares. Started out as a defensive midfielder, he would soon make a great partnership with Heredia in the center of defence. Very slow mobility but good positioning and header, he used his long legs to either recover and disrupt or create from the back, but wouldn't advance much, although his first few steps were great to dispose of the opposition. He had decent passing, especially short ones but wasn't very agile overall. As Miljan Miljanic mentioned in the report in 1973: Slender, fast, good jumper. His career took place mainly in Atlético Madrid, in which he played eleven seasons totaling 223 appearances without ever scoring a goal in the league. His palmarès includes six trophies, including three championships (1969-1970, 1972-1973, 1976-1977) and the 1974 Intercontinental Cup, during which he took the field as a starter. After the adventure with the Colchoneros he moved to Sporting Gijón where a bad injury did not allow him to play any games in the league. He finished his career the following year at Badajoz, the club that had launched him. He was called up to the national team on only one occasion, during a match of the Under-23 section played in 1971. Spoiler: show |
