INFO:One of the most emblematic players Barça had in the seventies, Asensi (Alicante, 1949) was a hard-working midfielder, the genuine lungs of a great team.
He was signed from Elche, and could not have done any better at FC Barcelona, where he always be remembered for his astounding commitment. His finest hour came in the league campaign of 1973-74, when he played in every game as Barça took the championship, and the year he appeared in the Cup Winners Cup Final in Basel, scoring a goal and collecting the trophy in his capacity as captain. His Barça career ended in 1980/81 when he signed for Mexican side Puebla.
Asensi was a goal scoring midfielder, with excellent technique, great header and coming in the area, strong in duel game, always known for being a born fighter in the field - both offensively & defensively. Amazing speed of dribble and ball possession, his game was characterized also by one-touch play, wide passing range and a fine outside curve. In the period until 1976 he was more of an attacking minded midfielder, while in the 1978-1980 period he would drop back more and act as a more defensive center midfielder.
Asensi represented Spain 41 times, scoring seven goals. His debut came in 1969 against Belgium for the 1970 FIFA World Cup qualification. Asensi was picked for the squads at the 1978 World Cup and UEFA Euro 1980 – his last international. All in all, he played 396 games for Barcelona, scoring 100 goals and being in top 20 in both categories for Barcelona.
