Sporting Kansas City was founded in 1995 as Kansas City Wiz. The team started playing in the MLS one year later. The name was changed to Kansas City Wizards in 1997 and Sporting Kansas City in 2011.
While the Wizards was a franchise with its own identity upon the foundation of the team, and Sporting Kansas City doesn't have an official predecessor, it's possible to find roots in the late 1960s. A team named Chicago Spurs was founded in 1966. They only played the 1967 season of the NASL before relocating to Kansas to avoid competition with the newly formed Chicago Mustangs. Therefore, Chicago Spurs became Kansas City Spurs, a team with a short existence that lasted from 1968 to 1970. Also, Sporting Kansas City makes sure to remember the former Kansas based team, the biggest example being an article, posted in 2019 in the club's website, that talks about the Spurs win of the 1969 NASL.
A second team from Kansas was founded in 1981: the Kansas City Comets. However, this team was active exclusively in the indoor league. They folded in 1991.
